Artificial Intelligence Gives Ford Edge New Edge & Reduces Fuel Usage

The new 2019 Ford Edge with artificial intelligence

Coming soon to Prestige Ford is the new 2019 Ford Edge. It will be made available with all-wheel drive that is smart enough to detect the different driving conditions you encounter and automatically shift between two-wheel and all-wheel drive. That means your vehicle will provides all-wheel-drive traction when you really need it, and switch it off when you don’t to help reduce your fuel consumption. On top of all this, Ford will also introduce its new artificial intelligence to the Edge.

Ford Artificial Intelligence Tech First 

It is no longer the stuff of science fiction movies, artificial intelligence (AI) is now being used to help improve your journey and improve your fuel efficiency, too.

The new available system is called all-wheel-drive disconnect. This first-for-Ford technology uses a form of AI which is able to calculate quicker than most of our human brains. Utilizing information that it is always receiving from a series of high-tech sensors, the new Edge is able to determine in a fraction of a second whether all-wheel drive should be engaged.

According to Scott Beiring, Ford driveline applications supervisor, “The concept is pretty simple, it was the execution that was the challenge. Shifting between two- and all-wheel drive needs to be fast and seamless enough that the customer doesn’t know it is happening.”

Not only does the electronic brain receive input from the sensors, it also interacts with the traction control system to detect wheel slip, and input from the anti-lock brake system to learn if that system is active. But wait…there’s more. The high-tech system even detects if the vehicle’s wipers are on, whether the SUV has a trailer in tow, as well as the current outside temperature.

Leading-Edge Logic

The system uses an algorithm that Ford refers to as “fuzzy logic” which processes all of the data. It is constantly monitoring and can detect in 10 milliseconds if the vehicle needs to engage or disengage all-wheel drive. It will then quickly distribute up to 100 percent of the available power from the front to the rear wheels, depending on driving conditions detected by the system.

Technology Fuels Efficiency

Ford states that the all-wheel-drive disconnect is the primary reason for the 2019 Ford Edge’s improved EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings. All-wheel drive equipped Ford Edge SUVs have EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. The front-wheel drive vehicles have EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway/25 mpg combined.

With standard all-wheel drive and a 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost® engine, Edge ST, the first SUV from the Ford Performance team, has EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/21 mpg combined. Actual mileage may vary. [1]

Additional fuel-saving tech features include:

  • 8-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears. Decreases engine rpm for improved fuel economy during highway cruising.
  • Active transmission warm-up.  Utilized reclaimed heat energy to warm up the transmission faster.
  • Standard Auto Start-Stop. Helps save fuel by shutting off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and auto-starts when the driver removes their foot from the brake.
  • Deceleration fuel shut-off stops fuel flow to the engine when the vehicle is reducing speed.
  • Exhaust gas recirculation  reduces harmful emissions and increases efficiency by allowing a larger throttle position, thereby reducing pumping loss.
  • Aerodynamic edge. The 2019 models are equipped with active grille shutters, full underbody shields and air curtains to reduce drag.

Ford Global Caring Month is underway with more than 10,000 Ford Motor Company employees signed up so far to make people’s lives better in 40 countries during September – and registrations are still coming in to the Ford Volunteer Corps.

At Randall Reed’s Prestige Ford, we are committed to giving back and being a part of our community. That’s why we are stoked for Ford Global Caring Month, which is underway with more than 10,000 Ford Motor Company employees signed up so far to make people’s lives better in 40 countries during September – and registrations are still coming in to the Ford Volunteer Corps.

Here at home, Prestige Ford has been active helping our kids and community. Recently, we helped Fill A Ford F-150 with food donations for a local charity, The Good Samaritans of Garland. Our Garland Ford dealership team hosted a Drive 4UR School event. Hundreds of Garland and Dallas-area neighbors showed up to drive the new Ford F-150, Mustang, Explorer, Escape, Edge, Fusion and other Ford cars, trucks and SUVs.

Prestige has also been sponsoring events, such as the Garland Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament. It was great fun sponsoring teams made up of Veterans, first responders and fellow business owners.

Around the world, Ford employees are doing some amazing work. In Brazil, Ford volunteers are building a new kitchen for families at a cancer center for children. In Germany, a pub is being transformed into a new community gathering place with services for residents in an underserved neighborhood. South Africa Ford employees are converting shipping containers into a classroom and daycare, while also establishing a recycling facility to help unemployed young people. This kind of change and difference making is so exciting to see happen all other world!

So What Is Ford Global Caring Month?

Ford Global Caring Month is underway with more than 10,000 Ford Motor Company employees signed up so far to make people’s lives better in 40 countries during September – and registrations are still coming in to the Ford Volunteer Corps.

It is the signature annual event of the Ford Volunteer Corps, an opportunity for teams of Ford employees to band together and help meet the urgent needs of people in powerful, impactful ways that strengthen the entire community.

“Ford volunteers are making steady progress toward our goal of a better world for everyone,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Ford and its employees know there is still much more work to do and we are committed to moving forward and improving the quality of life for people in our communities, not just for one month or one year, but in sustainable ways over the long haul.”

Work Around The World

Some of the work by Ford volunteers includes more than 300 projects across six continents. Ford Fund is contributing $700,000 in grants for nonprofits to purchase the tools and supplies needed to complete many of these global projects. And that’s just the start!

Other work from around the world includes:

  • Australia – Restoring camp for high-risk children and families to rebuild relationships
  • China – Harvest fruits at a charity farm and distribute the produce to local people in need
  • India – Restoring ponds and improving water access for 3,500 households in two villages
  • Mexico – Install solar dehydrators to preserve produce and build two homes for families
  • Mozambique – Restore clean water system and remodel bathroom facilities at nursing home
  • Philippines – Build community water facilities that will serve about 240 families
  • Thailand – Renovate and make improvements to a school water system
  • United Kingdom – Improve the grounds and renovate facilities at a hospice center
  • United States – Clear vacant lots and alleys, clean up blight in residential areas

Helping Locally

Ford Global Caring Month is underway with more than 10,000 Ford Motor Company employees signed up so far to make people’s lives better in 40 countries during September.

During September, Ford volunteers in the U.S. will concentrate their efforts on neighborhoods. Ford employees will participate in more than 100 volunteer activities across 14 states some of which include Arizona, California, Washington, New York, Ohio and Texas.

Specifically in Detroit, Ford volunteers will join hundreds of others in planting more than 600,000 daffodils on Belle Isle — one for every resident of the city. They will also be taking part in a project that will create safe pathways for students to school in the Regent Park neighborhood, which is not far from the Ford Resource and Engagement Center on Detroit’s east side.

“Healthy neighborhoods offer comfort, security and shared experiences that can make life richer and more enjoyable,” said Todd Nissen, director, Ford Volunteer Corps. “Neighborhoods are the building blocks of stronger communities, where people can find the assistance and the opportunities they need to raise their standard of living.”

Ford Volunteer Corps & Network

The Ford Volunteer Corps is the heart of a global network that enlists more than 30,000 employees annually. Ford Global Caring Month marks the largest concentration of Ford employees performing service work in the community each year, but Ford volunteers are on the job at food banks, care facilities and schools all year long.

Since its launch in 2005 by Executive Chairman Bill Ford, the Ford Volunteer Corps has contributed more than 1.5 million hours of community service in 50 countries, representing more than $40 million of in-kind community investments.

The Ford Volunteer Corps is advancing the creative ideas of Ford employees to have a lasting impact in the communities Ford serves. The Bill Ford Better World Challenge annually awards up to $500,000 to support Ford volunteer projects focused on providing better access to clean water and improved sanitation, solutions to mobility challenges and meeting basic needs. Graduates of Ford’s Thirty Under 30 philanthropic leadership program are also putting their training to work guiding other Ford employees and developing transformational projects that compete for grants in the Bill Ford Better World Challenge.

Legendary Shelby GT500 Prototype “Little Red” Found, Restoration Efforts Begin

Here at Prestige Ford in Garland, we love a good vintage Mustang story. And boy is this the “holy grail” of vintage Mustang stories – “Little Red” comes home.

LITTLE RED – 1967 SHELBY GT500 EXP PROTOTYPE

Known amongst class car enthusiasts as simply – Little Red – the 1967 Shelby GT500 EXP Prototype was finally found. Lost for decades, Little Red was traced back to a rural field right in our own backyard, Weatherford, Texas by Barrett-Jackson chairman and CEO, Craig Jackson.

The GT500 prototype is considered one of the most significant finds in American car collector history.

“Finding Little Red is the discovery of a lifetime,” said Jackson. “This Shelby prototype has been one of the most sought-after and elusive vehicles in postwar history. Countless enthusiasts and experts have searched for Little Red since it went missing in the 1960s. Many believed it was destroyed when the car was no longer needed. I’m excited to announce that was not the case. We’ve found Little Red and we intend to meticulously restore this legendary car back to its original glory.”

Jackson’s team, consisting of classic car restoration specialist Jason Billups and renowned Mustang expert Kevin Marti, who authenticated the original Bullitt Mustang shell that sat in a Mexican junkyard for years just last year, authenticated the Shelby find back in March. They used cross references, serial numbers, date codes and other confidential documents proving the vehicle was the fabled missing Shelby prototype.

Restoration Efforts

Now, Little Red will get the VIP restoration treatment, eventually getting restored to its originally status. Furthermore, the project, lead by Jackson, will be fully documented at the vintage prototype’s new digital home here. It will include photos and videos, storyboarding its path back to its full Shelby glory.

As a result, Jackson is urging people to help take part in this restoration project by submitting personal accounts, stories and photos of the vehicle to show its history.

“This will be the first time that a collector car vehicle will be substantiated, in part, using a crowdsourcing initiative on www.ShelbyPrototypeCoupes.com.”

Prestige Fills-A-Ford With Donations For Good Samaritans

Prestige Ford & Good Samaritans of Garland's Fill-A-Ford EventEveryone here at Prestige Ford is so excited to work with the Good Samaritans of Garland, Inc. and are beyond grateful to the community for helping donate to our Fill-A-Ford charity event!

With your contributions, we were able to bring in over 1,650 cans of meat ravioli! If you missed out on the event, Good Samaritans are always in need of other food items.

They are currently in need of canned fruit and peanut butter for the Garland, Rowlett and Sachse communities. When you’re ready to show your support, you may drop off goods to Pam Proft Swendig at 214 N 12th St, Garland, TX.

Good Samaritans compassionately provide food assistance to help families and individuals move toward self sufficiency.
