The recent Drive for Diabetes 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway ended up being a headline-making day for one driver. 24-year-old Joey Logano of Penske Racing set multiple records not only for the track, but in the history of the NASCAR XFINITY Series as well. The young driver is in his sixth year racing for NASCAR and primarily drives the No. 22 Pennzoil Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. His vehicle for the XFINITY Series is the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang, and he used it to its fullest abilities in his record-setting win at Bristol.
Logano started in the second position behind Erik Jones, whom he overtook in short order after the race began. After the second turn, Logano found himself leading the pack, and it was there he would remain for the entire race. Every single one of the three hundred laps were led by the No. 22 Mustang. Logano’s pit crew was in top form as well, as they got Logano out of the pits and back into the race first every time. Logano developed a five-second lead over the rest of the field and his Mustang was soon enmeshed in lapped traffic.
For the last 120 laps of the race, Logano was actually running on a single set of tires, which made his win all the more impressive. Pushing tires that far can often result in loss of control or a blowout, but Logano held on and demonstrated superb control over his machine. He and his Mustang set two new records for the XFINITY Series: one for leading the most laps in a single NXS race, and another for being the only driver to lead every single lap at an NXS race at Bristol Motor Speedway. This win further cemented Team Penske’s place at the top of the NXS Owner Standings.
