Pulling a trailer requires both driving skills and the proper tow vehicle and equipment. Before hitching up the boat to head out to the water this summer, use this pre-trip checklist to make sure your trailer and vehicle are up to the challenge.
1. Check vehicle: Before buying the trailer and/or vehicle check the owner’s manual to be sure that the vehicle can tow and how much weight it can pull.
2. Hitch: Make sure that you have the correct hitch to hook the tow up. It is especially important to check if you have one installed after market.
3. Weight distribution: Rule of thumb: Keep the center of gravity as low as possible. About 60 percent of the boat’s weight should be positioned on the front half of the trailer and 40 percent in the rear.
4. Prepare tow vehicle: To have a safe towing experience, check to make sure your vehicle’s gas and oil are at the correct levels. Also, check toe see that all the tires are inflated to the proper pressure level.
5.Light Check: After attaching your trailer, test the brake lights and hazard lights to ensure they are in proper working order.
6. Safety Chains: Make sure the Coupler and safety chains are secured to the hitch of the tow vehicle.
